The History of Sigma Beta Rho at Boston University
The roots of Sigma Beta Rho in Boston began growing as early as 1999. The ideals of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance were brought to Boston College by one man, John Palmerson, Brother Shunun. Mr.Palmerson, along with other brothers who crossed at BC that following year, worked hard around the Boston College campus to build a strong reputation. This reputation was hard to achieve, as Greek life is not recognized at Boston College. Despite this setback, the brothers at Boston College believed it was time to create a Boston-wide network of Brothers and in 2000 they sought out neighboring universities to fulfill this need. One of these universities was Boston University, and in 2000 two students at Boston University became a part of the Boston-wide network of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity.

Several years later, Sigma Beta Rho nationals believed that the men of the Boston-wide network of Sigma Beta Rho deserved chapter recognition based on their endeavors in the city of Boston and granted them the status of Eta Chapter.

By 2004, Sigma Beta Rho’s presence in the Boston area was dwindling. Due to several intra-fraternal conflicts and various other problems, the Eta Chapter ceased to exist. While never officially recognized at Boston University, the Brothers of the Eta Chapter who were students of Boston University graduated. A Revelation was in dire need.

In 2005, seven young men with a shared vision to bring back the ideals set forth by our founders came together to revive Sigma Beta Rho at Boston University. In their search for true brotherhood in a milieu that celebrated their societal backgrounds while always paying the proper respect to their personal ideals and beliefs, these men successfully crossed into the fraternity and began their efforts to become recognized throughout the Boston University Campus.

As Remembrance is an ideal that all Sigma Beta Rho Brothers uphold to the highest degree, these seven men took on the status of the Gamma class to remember the Boston University brothers from the Eta Chapter.

In the time since the Gamma class revived Sigma Beta Rho at Boston University, the fraternity has established itself as a powerful force on the BU campus and in the city of Boston, earning both official recognition by the University and the respect of fellow Greeks and students on campus. The fraternity also brought back the vision of a Boston-wide network, and formed Sigma Beta Rho at Northeastern, which later became the Alpha Beta chapter. Brothers at BU have served in numerous student associations on campus from local dance teams, Student Government, Greek councils, Global Brigades, to innumerable Cultural Organizations. In recognition of the countless hours of service and the passion that we have for our organization, we have received local awards from Boston University and national awards from Sigma Beta Rho Nationals.
The National History of Sigma Beta Rho
The Alpha Chapter of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. was founded on August 16, 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The founders came together with a vision of an organization for the betterment and preservation of South Asians in the United States. They envisioned a Greek-Lettered organization in which membership would remain constant and growing and would facilitate involvement from its alumni members. They realized that in order for their vision to truly become a reality they needed to spread their principles and ideals to other college campuses, thereby establishing a nationwide network. On August 22, 1998 several new members were inducted to Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. Their induction marked the establishment of the Beta Chapter at the State University of New York at Binghamton. At this time eight men from three different universities were given the status of National Founding Fathers as they were the Brothers who established the fraternity.

These eight men established this fraternity to foster the ideals of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance amongst its members. They believed that through their bonds of brotherhood they would be able to establish an organization that would instill unity amongst its members, promote South Asian culture, and aid the larger community. They felt that the principles of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance would develop leaders from young men both as undergraduate students on their college campuses and as professionals in their vocations upon graduation. These young men would serve as role models and mentors in their respective communities, break down barriers between different ethnic groups, and, through their leadership, would aid their communities in attaining better and brighter futures. It is to this end that the Brothers of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. work so diligently to this day.
All the Brothers strive to uphold the ideals of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance so that one day our future may be a brighter one.

Sigma Beta Rho has grown across the East Coast with fifteen chapters in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Florida, Virginia, and Georgia, making us the largest and most expansive fraternity of our kind. With a stronghold of eight chapters and colonies in New York State and nationally headquartered out of New York City, Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. has become the most sought after multicultural fraternity for Americans and international students alike. Together we work to establish the nationwide network that was envisioned by our founding fathers. As every day passes we realize that we are another day closer to that original vision. Through the years, we have carried our ideals of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance beyond our original objectives. We accept Brothers of all cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs and promote diversity within our organization. It is our belief that our three pillars: Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance, help to create strong leaders for the community.
